Radios of Interest (and for sale) May 2011
| On the left is the Masterwork M104. This is a simple 10-transistor shirt pocket radio from the 1970s. You probably have seen many AM/FM radios of this size and design: slide-rule scale, whip antenna, earphone jack, and thumb knobs for tuning and volume. Shockingly, as far as I can tell, this is the only FM-only radio with this design. | ![]() |

On the right is the Sony 2FA-24W auto-tune transistor radio. This is a fascinating and very unusual radio. This is long and thin, and heavy for its size. It is the classic jam-packed Japanese transistor radio. The top control is a push button. When pushed in it compresses a mainspring. When the button is released, the dial begins to rotate. The dial continues to rotate until a strong station is reached. Internally, there is a signal strength meter connected to the mechanical spring system. That meter trips a mechanism and relases all the remaining compression of the spring. The result: auto-tuning. Each time you press and release the top botton, the radio finds the next station. The top botton also serves as the volume control. A wheel knob, also on top, is for fine tuning. |
The Voxson Tanga is a tiny, removeable car radio that won numerous design awards in the early 1970s. It fits into a small dashboard holder and was the perfect size for the classic Fiat 600. There are two radios, AM (red) and FM (green). Both are for sale, including the car holder, the matching leather zipper pouch and the very rare home base.
